COMMUNITY BACKGROUND
Providence is situated on the northwest side of Rhode Island. Providence is the capital of Rhode Island.As of the 2010 census, there are currently 1,051,302 residents in Providence. Out of 1,051,302, there 41,634 who are children in Providence and in total 223,956 in Rhode Island. Providence is the second highest populated city in New England. 73.4% of providence is populated by white Americans. 8.5% of African Americans. 3.7% Asian- American, and 18.8% Hispanics make up the population of Rhode Island. Providence's median household income is $48,500 which around the same with the state family house hold income. In the median household income, Providence is $61,265 which is less than the state at 70,663 but it is higher than the entire United States at $62,982. There an 11.6 percentage of all families below the poverty but it is lower than all people below the property level which is 15.4%. There is a 66% of High Schools graduations in Providence which is really low compared to Rhode Island and United States at 83.7% and 85%. It is interesting to see that Providence has 22.1 % of poverty level of people who are under 18. The census-based indicators states that there is a 46% in Providence children that live in single-parent homes. There is a 5% of teens in Rhode Island that are currently not working or in school. In Providence, there is 9% unemployment which could be a factor as to why the family household income is so low in Providence. In Providence alone in the past three years, there has been a rise to people being part of the Food Stamp Program at 22,933 in 2010 and in 2011 23,803. As well as the School Breakfast Program participation which almost doubled from 2010-2011 from 34% to %51%.
